Here is an article that is less than a week old, on the subject of acupuncture for paediatric tonsillectomy, or more specifically (and in simpler English) acupuncture for the alleviation of pain in children who have had their tonsils surgically removed. Many previous studies have shown that acupuncture is effective for postoperative pain, and also for the specific pain of tonsillectomy (operation to remove the tonsils). In this study, a group of 60 children, aged 3-12, were divided into an acupuncture group, and a control group and the children in the acupuncture group showed significant pain relief immediately after acupuncture treatment. Those children also reported less use of painkiller medication and there were no side-effects to the treatment. The authors of the study therefore concluded that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for children suffering pain after surgical removal of tonsils. The study was published in the Journal of Paediatric Anaesthesia and though I don’t currently have access to the full paper, I have included a link to the abstract.
Until I get access to the full paper, so that I can provide more detail on how the study was conducted, here is a similar study from 2011 on the use of acupuncture and acupressure (similar to acupuncture, just using finger pressure rather than needles) to control vomiting and nausea in children after having their tonsils removed. The study was conducted in Norway with a group of 154 children divided into two groups. One group received the standard treatment and the other group received acupuncture at a point called “Pericardium 6” (near the wrist) for around 20 minutes, followed by an acupressure wristband for the next 24 hours combined with the standard treatment. The children in the acupuncture/acupressure group experiences less vomiting and nausea (46.8%) in the 24 hours following surgery, compared to the control group (66.2%)- a significant decrease. The acupuncture/acupressure treatment was particularly effective in girls, and in children aged 1-3. The study concludes by recommending the use of acupuncture/acupressure treatment in children undergoing tonsillectomy.
